Spieth struggles as weather shows teeth
TROON, Scotland, July 17: Royal Troon bared its teeth on Saturday as the third day of the British Open got underway in difficult conditions and one of the early victims was twice major winner Jordan Spieth.
The American carded four early birdies to get back to level par but things then got ugly as he approached the turn with the weather deteriorating. The wind had shifted overnight to out of the west, putting it from left to right on the inward nine. With the wind picking up, Spieth bogeyed nine and 10. He double-bogeyed 11 and then bogeyed 15. That left him at five over par, one worse than his score when the round began.
He was not alone. Danny Willett, this year's Masters champion, started in the group before Spieth and racked up four bogeys on the front nine and two more on the back. Three birdies were not enough to keep his score from ballooning to seven over. Bubba Watson, playing alongside Willett, collected five birdies but also suffered three bogeys and a triple bogey. That took him to five over and, like compatriot Spieth, one shot worse off than his starting score.
Tournament leader American Phil Mickelson is on 10 under par. Playing with him will be Swede Henrik Stenson, who is one shot back.
Lahiri misfires
Anirban Lahiri was disillusioned after stumbling to a disappointing five-over-par 76 in the third round. The reigning Asian Tour No. 1 struggled on the greens on yet another blustery day, needing 32 putts which included three putting on three occasions as he fell off the pace in the year's third Major. A double bogey on the second hole set the tone for Lahiri's difficult day. A birdie on four was the Indian's only respite as he dropped three straight bogeys from the 10th hole before missing a short par attempt at the last. Lahiri stands at four-over-par 217 and is well out of contention. ... More
